Superior Grouting works with industry firms to provide geotechnical and remedial grouting services to the Railroad Industry including: soil stabilization to correct subgrade settlement, beneath rail lines and lifting solutions for track crossings, joints and switchovers with a focus on maintaining railway uptime. Superior Grouting specializes in ground modification and the pressure grouting of underground pipelines for the Railroad Industry, including: long distance pushes and minimal injection points where custom mix designs are required are our specialty.
Compaction grouting, also known as ‘Low Mobility Grouting’, is a grouting technique developed in the 1950’s as a remedial measure for the correcting of settlement of heavy structures. The grout displaces and densifies loose granular soils, reinforces fine grained soils and stabilizes subsurface voids or sinkholes. Grouting is accomplished by the multi-step injections of low-slump, low mobility grout. The soil becomes increasingly dense as water and/or air are forced out and soil particles are rearranged by the incoming grout. If lift is a desired result, the process can be continued on a controlled basis until lift requirements have been achieved.
Our company has used compaction grouting in many situations:
Stabilizing soils beneath railway beds
Soil stabilization of settling structures
Lifting and stabilizing railway crossings
Remediation of sinkholes

Compaction grouting is a specialized technique for in-situ densification of compactable soft or loose soils. A stiff grout is extruded into a soil mass to form an expanding bulb. Any soil capable of being mechanically compacted can be densified by compaction grouting. Superior Grouting’s equipment, capable of achieving grouting pressures of 1000+ psi, can be operated at distances several hundred feet from the injection site and has the capability of drilling in low overhead tight access work areas.
Increased soil strength
Increased load bearing capacity
Reduction in settlement (lower compressibility)
Reduction in the flow of water (water seepage)
Reduction in soil swelling (expansion) and collapse (soil contraction)
Increased soil stability

There are many variables to consider such as: diameter of pipe, volume of material required, size of annular/annulus space, degree of inclination, size of staging area for grouting equipment and a number of other factors. Typically, Superior Grouting pumps distances ranging from 100 Lineal Feet to 2,000 Lineal Feet. In some specific applications, we have pumped material over a distance of 5,000 LF (~1 Mile).
There are a number of considerations. One critical factor is there is a limited amount of time to place the material required for any given distance. The number of access points is determined by the diameter of the pipe, length and volume of material.
No – the general contractor prepares the pipe for the grouting procedure by installing the injection/vent pipes, the grout plug and any other requirement necessary for the pressure grouting procedure.
